The Department of Earth Sciences teaches and carries out high-profile research in a wide range of Earth Science sub-disciplines. These cover the two main areas of departmental activity, viz Geology and Marine and Environmental Geochemistry. The Department offers an undergraduate programme in each area, trains honours streams in Applied Geology and Environmental Geochemistry, and hosts both Master's and Doctoral degree students in each of these areas.
The Department has one vacancy in the area of sedimentology and invites applications at any level, from Lecturer to Full Professor. The position calls for a dynamic individual with research interests that will complement the departmental research strengths, goals and the University's mission statement, and who will contribute to our core teaching in Geology and specifically in Sedimentology. We reserve the right not to make an appointment if applicants have insufficient qualifications/skills, as outlined below.
Duties:
All Post Levels
- Undergraduate teaching and field work;
- teaching and supervising honours students;
- supervising research students (MSc and PhD);
- conducting an active research programme and seeking external funding for this (preferably in collaboration with others within and outside the Department);
- publishing research results in accredited, high-impact, international journals;
- participating in the administration of some departmental activities.
Professor/Associate Professor
- Taking a leading role in sedimentology research;
- assisting in building a strong complement of postdoctoral and PhD researchers working in an integrated Earth Sciences programme.
Requirements:
All Post Levels
- PhD in Earth Sciences, with an emphasis on sedimentology or sedimentary or deposits and processes.
Lecturer
- Published research in leading international journals in their subject field;
- demonstrated potential to develop an active research programme;
- potential to develop an innovative teaching programme in the area of sedimentology.
Senior Lecturer
- Postdoctoral research experience over several years, or experience of teaching and research in a University environment, or relevant industry-related research experience;
- a body of published research as principal author in leading international journals in their subject field;
- demonstrated potential to develop an active research programme;
- evidence or potential to develop an innovative teaching programme in the area of sedimentology.
Associate Professor/Professor
- Previous appointment as academic staff in a University environment or in a research management position within a non-university environment;
- a record of high-profile publications as lead author in high impact international journals (in the general area of sedimentology);
- demonstrated ability to attract external research funding;
- demonstrated leadership or the potential to assume a leadership role within the research community of the Department;
- a record of supervision of Master's and Doctoral students to successful completion.
Recommendations:
All Post Levels
- An interest and background in sedimentology, basin development and evolution, and the use of geochemical and isotopic tracers of sediment provenance, marine sedimentology, sedimentary ore genesis;
- demonstrated potential to involve students in original research in sedimentology.
Lecturer
- Postdoctoral research experience;
- some experience of teaching undergraduate students in a University environment;
- industry-related experience;
- successful supervision of MSc and PhD students;
- for a South African National, an NRF research rating.
Senior Lecturer
- Supervision of some postgraduate students;
- successful supervision of MSc and PhD students;
- for a South African National, an NRF research rating.
Professor/Associate Professor
- An excellent track record of teaching within academia, in the relevant field;
- successful supervision of a number of MSc and PhD students;
- for a South African national, an NRF research rating of B or higher.
