Senior GIS Specialist

The Planning and Development Division focuses on creating and improving SU's building infrastructure. These involve: Facilities planning - Spatial management and development planning - Campus Master Plan - Database management - Property administration - Capital projects - Architectural design.

Duties:

  • The maintenance and delivery of management reports in respect of the databases of all properties, infrastructure, buildings, cadastral information and spatial usage, by means of a geographical information system (GIS);
  • Updating of information systems and annual reporting on spatial usage by means of a Department of Higher Education management information system (HEMIS);
  • Researching and documenting of an integrated GIS strategy for the Department Facilities Management;
  • Researching and documenting of maintenance update methodology and responsible for implementation and coordination of methodology to ensure data integrity;
  • Coordinating, monitoring, implementation and evaluation of integration with other university systems that make use of the GIS data in facilities management;
  • Building effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Participating in cross-cutting organisational, national and international GIS programmes;
  • Performing research into new techniques, technology, solutions and software;
  • Optimising and automating existing processes;
  • Data manipulation and transformation;
  • Finding solutions to complex technical problems;
  • Providing technical guidance in the team.

Requirements:

  • Three-year tertiary qualification in Geography / Town Plan / Demography / Cartography / Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
  • 5 years' relevant GIS experience;
  • Competent and conversant with spatial analysis techniques;
  • Experience in the creation of intelligent maps;
  • Knowledge of South African geography and use of spatial datasets is essential;
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite;
  • High level of experience with at least two GIS software packages, ESRI products;
  • Experience in enterprise GIS;
  • Excellent report-writing skills;
  • Training in project management;
  • Experience in GIS systems architecture;
  • Experience in mobile and web-based GIS;
  • Experience in developing applications for hand-held devices will be an advantage;
  • Experience in ESRI GIS products: ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcObjects, Java connector for ArclMS will be a definitive advantage.

Die Afdeling Beplanning en Ontwikkeling fokus op die vestiging en verbetering van die US se geboue-infrastruktuur. Dit behels: Fasiliteitsbeplanning - Ruimtelike bestuur en ontwikkelingsbeplanning - Kampusmeesterplan - Databasisbestuur - Eiendomsadministrasie - Kapitaalprojekte - Argiteksontwerp.

Pligte:

  • Die instandhouding en lewering van bestuursverslae ten opsigte van die databasisse vir alle eiendom, infrastruktuur, geboue, kadastrale inligting en ruimtelike gebruik, deur middel van 'n geografiese inligtingstelsel (GIS);
  • Bywerk van inligtingstelsels en jaarlikse verslae oor ruimtelike gebruik deur middel van 'n Departement van HoŽr Onderwys Inligtingbestuurstels (HEMIS);
  • Navorsing en dokumentering van 'n geÔntegreerde GIS-strategie vir die Departement Fasiliteitsbestuur;
  • Navorsing en dokumentering van metodologie vir die bywerk van instandhouding en verantwoordelik vir die implementering en koŲrdinering van metodologie, ten einde data-integriteit te verseker;
  • KoŲrdinering, monitering, implemenering en evaluering van integrasie met ander universiteitstelsels wat gebruik maak van die GIS-data in fasiliteitsbestuur;
  • Bou van doeltreffende vennootskappe met interne en eksterne belanghebbers;
  • Deelname in dwarsleggende organisatoriese, nasionale en internasionale GIS-programme;
  • Navorsing oor nuwe tegnieke, tegnologie, oplossings en programmatuur;
  • Optimalisering en outomatisering van bestaande prosesse;
  • Datamanupilering en -transformasie;
  • Vind van oplossings vir ingewikkelde tegniese problem
  • Lewer tegniese leiding aan die span.

Vereistes:

  • Driejaar tersiÍre kwalifikasie in Geografie / Stadsbeplanning / Demografie / Kartografie / Geografiese Inligtingstelsels (GIS);
  • 5 jaar toepaslike GIS-ervaring;
  • Vaardig en vertroud met ruimtelike analisetegnieke
  • Ervaring met die skep van intelligente landkaarte;
  • Kennis van Suid-Afrikaanse geografie en gebruik van ruimtelike datastelle is noodsaaklik;
  • Kennis van MS Office-pakket
  • HoŽ vlak van ervaring met minstens twee GIS-sagtewarepakkette, ESRI-produkte;
  • Ervaring in ondernemings-GIS;
  • Uitstekende verslagskryfvaardighede;
  • Opleiding in projekbestuur;
  • Ervaring in GIS-stelselsargitektuur;
  • Ervaring in mobiele en webgebasseerde GIS:
  • Ervaring met die ontwikkeling van toepassings vir handtoestelle sal voordelig wees;
  • Ervaring van ESRI GIS-produkte: ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcObjects, Java connector for ArclMS sal 'n besliste voordeel wees.
