Analyst: XRF Division, ICP-MS XRF Unit

The aim of the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) is to ensure optimal utilisation of expensive multi-user research equipment in the service of the research community of Stellenbosch University, and the South African research and development sector in general.

The XRF and mineral separation division within the ICP-MS & XRF unit provides a service to research institutions both locally and abroad. The sample preparation section prepares samples for XRF analysis, from crushing and milling to casting of fusions, as well as mineral separation for U/Pb geochronology, with XRF analysis done on a Panalytical Axios instrument.

Duties:

  • Operation of all instrumentation within the division;
  • Proper maintenance scheduling on all equipment;
  • Writing of SOPs for existing and new laboratory protocols;
  • Method validation on all applications;
  • Establish good relationships with clients;
  • Method and standards development for new applications.

Requirements:

  • A MSc qualification in a relevant field such as geology or geochemistry;
  • Practical experience in sample preparation and mineral separation;
  • Practical experience in the analysis of rock major and trace elements by XRF, including calibration and method development on a variety of research fields.

Recommendations:

  • Experience in SEM analysis, specifically in earth sciences applications;
  • Experience in method validation;
  • Experience in laboratory management.

All candidates meeting the requirements for the position will be required to perform a practical test on the opperation of the relevant equipment.

Die Sentrale Analitiese Fasiliteit (SAF) se doel is om die optimale gebruik van duur multigebruiker- avorsingstoerusting te verseker. Hierdie toerusting word deur die navorsingsgemeenskap van die Universiteit Stellenbosch en die Suid-Afrikaanse navorsings- en ontwikkelingsektor gebruik.

Die XRF- en mineraalskeidingsafdeling binne die IGP-MS & XRF-eenheid verskaf 'n diens aan navorsingsinstansies in Suid Afrika sowel as die buiteland. In die monstervoorbereiding afdeling word monsters vir XRF-analise berei, vanaf vergruising en verpoeiering, tot die maak van fusies, asook mineraalskeiding vir U/Pb-geochronologie. Toerusting vir XRF-analise is 'n Panalytical Axios-instrument.

Pligte:

  • Bedryf van alle toerusting binne die eenheid;
  • Behoorlike skedulering van instandhouding van alle instrumente;
  • Skryf van SBP's vir bestaande en nuwe laboratoriumprotokolle;
  • Metodiek-akkreditasie vir alle toepassings;
  • Vestiging van goeie verhoudings met kliŽnte;
  • Ontwikkeling van metodes en standaarde vir nuwe toepassings.

Vereistes:

  • 'n MSc-kwalifikasie in 'n toepaslike vakrigting soos geologie of geochemie;
  • Praktiese ervaring in monstervoorbereiding en mineraalskeiding;
  • Praktiese ervaring in die analise van heel-rots hoof- en spoorelemente met XRF, insluitend kalibrasie en metodiekontwikkeling in verskeie navorsingstoepassings.

Aanbevelings:

  • Ervaring in SEM-analise, spesifiek in aardwetenskap toepassings;
  • Ervaring in metodiekvalidasie;
  • Ervaring in laboratoriumbestuur.
