To this end, CAF consists of operational units built around logical clusters of equipment and each managed by a Staff Scientist. The CAF Staff Scientists are accomplished researchers with an established specialisation in the analytical techniques.

The CAF Electron Microscopy Unit is equipped with a ZEISS MERLIN FE SEM with a Scanning TEM detector; a ZEISS EVO MA15VP SEM with Oxford EDX and WDX Detectors; and, a LEO 1450VP SEM. Quantitative electron beam analysis, including cryo-analysis of difficult materials, is an existing strength of the facility which we wish to develop. The current staff complement of the unit consists of a Staff Scientist (this position) and a Senior Analyst. Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience and extends into the senior academic range (associate professor equivalent).

  • Planning of future equipment acquisitions to best meet the research needs of the university and generating grant applications to fund new equipment;
  • Ensuring that the staff members of the EM unit are well equipped to support researchers in their use of the microscopes;
  • Ensuring that the full functionality of the microscopes is available to advanced users;
  • Ensuring effective training structures for the unit in order to create a wide pool of researchers and postgraduate students who are proficient at electron microscopy;
  • Successfully perusing own research in field of specialisation;
  • Developing new methods for imaging and analysis.

Requirements:

  • PhD degree;
  • Experience in independent operation of scanning electron microscopes;
  • An active research record evidenced by publication;
  • Experience of quantitative electron beam micro-analysis;
  • Demonstrated competency in major and trace element analysis of minerals using ED and WD techniques;
  • Exceptional scientific report writing and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative;
  • Good people relations.

Recommendations:

  • Experience of managing an electron microscopy facility;
  • Experience in developing standards for ED or WD spectrometry;
  • Experience in servicing EM equipment;
  • Experience in multidisciplinary research using electron microscopy.

Commencement of duties: 1 January 2017
Closing date: 30 November 2016

Personeel-Wetenskaplike: Elektronmikroskopie

(Verw. SAF/421/1116)
