Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Igneous Petrology/Igneous Geochemistry

(Three-year Contract Appointment with Possibility of Renewal)

The Department, which currently houses eleven academic and three support staff, has a particular strength in hard-rock petrology and petrogenesis. At present the main specialties are in the areas of high-grade metamorphism, crustal melting and granite genesis. We have ready access, on campus, to a wide range of mechanical and analytical techniques that are required to support research in this area (rock storage, preparation, crushing, etc., a mineral separation laboratory, EMP, SEM, XRF, ICP-MS [LA and solution]). Other relevant areas covered within the Department, include structural geology, tectonics and ore-deposit geology. The Department is highly research-orientated, with an emphasis on publication in top-quality journals and the supervision of research students.

Duties: Teaching undergraduate and honours courses in Igneous Petrology

  • teaching service courses as may be required
  • supervising honours, MSc and PhD student research projects
  • participating in the development of the departmental undergraduate and honours curriculum
  • participating in departmental administration
  • following of and seeking funding for a productive personal research programme

Requirements: PhD in Igneous Petrology or Igneous Geochemistry

  • a track record of research in the field of igneous processes
  • excellent research skills, as evidenced by publications in high-profile international, peer-reviewed petrology journals
  • ability to teach Igneous Petrology from a geochemical and/or tectonic perspective.

Recommendations: Demonstrated competence to teach at undergraduate level o an interest in and the ability to apply principles of igneous petrology/geochemistry to the study of magmatic/igneous-related ore deposits o an interest in orogenesis and Archaean crustal evolution.
