Research Scientist/Engineering Associate III



The Bureau of Economic Geology is recruiting for a Research Scientist/Engineering Associate III to manage and operate the rock mechanic equipment and provide technical support and assistance with rock mechanics research. The essential functions will be to: Run and monitor various rock mechanic experiments under general direction of the assigned researcher. Select and prepare samples using safe operations. Test and report results. Archive samples and results in a database. Maintain, troubleshoot and repair lab equipment. Design and implement new measuring techniques and participate in lab expansion and development. Train researchers and graduate students on experiment techniques. Guide students on lab experiments related to their research or thesis work. Supervise junior staff members and student employees. Purchase supplies and/or research equipment, as needed.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree, or a Bachelor's degree and four to six years of related experience in geology, engineering, or related field. Two years of applied experience in operation of rock mechanic testing apparatus or other laboratory apparatus such as hydraulics, analog, and/or digital electronics, high pressure equipment, servo control systems, and digital data acquisition. Qualified candidates must have experience managing and running a rock mechanics laboratory to include: running routine rock mechanics experiments, managing test results database, keeping inventory, determining equipment purchase priorities based on budget allowances, training staff and students in application and safe use of equipment, diagnosing equipment malfunctions, and dismantling and repairing equipment are especially encourage to apply. A proven record of safe laboratory operations and a willingness to travel for technical meetings, professional training and equipment tests is requested.

This position will be based in North Austin at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, The University of Texas at Austin. Austin is often on the list of top 10 or top 5 places to live in the U.S.
