The Faculty of Science and Technology at UiT The arctic University of Norway has a vacant position as Head of the Department of Geology. The appointment is for a four-year term, which may be extended for an additional two terms. The current Head of Department moves to a new position.

The Faculty of Science and Technology is comprised of six departments, the primary tasks are research, education, dissemination and innovation within science and technology. We collaborate broadly with other scientific institutions on a local, national and international level.

The Department is undergoing a very exciting development with great student influx and increased activity e.g with the newly funded Centre for excellence (CoE) and Roald Amundsen Petroleum Research.

The Department of Geology currently has 20 scientific staff positions, 20 PhD-students and 10 technical/administrative positions. The Department hosts approx. 230 students.

The Department is comprised of three main research groups: polar marine geology and geophysics, coastal and terrestrial geology and bedrock geology (crustal dynamics). The Department of Geology offers courses at all levels, from bachelor to PhD studies and has a separate PhD Trainee school.

The Institute stimulates research and education within strategic important field- and knowledge areas as for example energy, resources and climate, cf the departments website.

The Head of Department will hold the overall responsibility for the Department's joint enterprises and reports to the Dean. The Head of Department will be assisted by a dedicated administrative staff.

Key tasks:

  • Leading academic, administrative and financial activities of the Department
  • Ensure quality and good balance between education, research, communication and innovation
  • Help create a positive organizational culture and encourage a productive working environment for staff and students
    • Lead participant based processes
    • Represent the Department and promote internal and external collaboration
  • Ensure that the Department follow good safety practice and human resources management
    • Ensure adequate technical and administrative support
  • Ensure that quality control management systems and financial management is subject to the rules and procedures

Qualifications:

  • Experience of management at e.g university, college, research institution, science based business or public administration
  • Ability to work strategically
  • Good leadership skills, motivational, and an inclusive leadership style
  • Good communication skills, good at networking and building trust

Qualifications at the level of Professor/Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professorship are required, within the relevant professional field. If special professional and recruitment-related considerations dictate, the requirement for competence for an Associate Professorship may be waived. In addition, relevant leadership experience is required, as is an interest in professional field leadership and a good ability to cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasised.

It is expected that the Head of Department will maintain his/her own research activity during the appointment term. Funding for a three year post doc will be made available. Exemption from ordinary lecturing will be granted; however, the Head of Department is expected to tutor PhD and master students in their own research programs.

During the appointment term a research period up to 14 months is built up. It is expected that the Head of Department will carry out research periods in six-monthly units if this is carried out during the appointment term. Extra research periods after the expiry of the term of office may be considered according to rules stipulated in specific regulations.

Remuneration is in accordance with state wage scales, code 1475. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
