University of Tromsų, Norway

Full Professor/ Associate Professor in Petrology

The University of Tromsų is a leading research and teaching centre in Northern Norway and together with the Norwegian Polar Institute a key provider for Arctic Science. For our increased research and teaching activities in hard rock geology the Department of Geology at the University of Tromsų, Norway, invites applications for a permanent position in petrology at the associate or full professor level, commensurate with the track record and qualifications of the candidate.

The Department of Geology is looking for a dynamic candidate with an expertise in metamorphic petrology and a strong track record to complement the existing research strengths of the fields of structural geology, experimental rock deformation, ore geology, and mineralogy of the crustal dynamics group, which presently comprises four permanent faculty members. The department“s facilities include mineral separation, an experimental solid medium deformation lab, XRF, and a new Zeiss Merlin SEM with WDS, EDS, EBSD, and CL-detectors. It is an advantage if the candidate has theoretical and practical knowledge in XRF and electron beam analysis. The research should focus on metamorphic petrology based on modern analytical and theoretical methods. Research fields may include, but are not restricted to, fluid-rock interaction, reaction mechanisms, diffusion studies, thermodynamic modeling, metasomatic systems, or reactions related to ore genesis in metamorphic systems.

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and advanced graduate courses in petrology, and supervise students, mainly at the MSc and PhD level. In addition, he or she is expected to establish an internationally competitive active research program in petrology and should demonstrate the ability to generate a high level of external funding of research.

The department wishes to increase its number of female professors. Women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.
