Postdoc Position in Petrology/Rock Deformation
at the University of Tromsų
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate to join a team of researchers in a new project: "Crustal dynamics and strength evolution of the continental crust". Your primary role will be to undertake field-based analysis of naturally deformed rocks from high temperature shear zones in Northern Norway, focussing on deformation mechanisms, fluid infiltration, and rheology in the lower crust. The methods employed will comprise quantitative microstructure and texture analysis, temperature/pressure calculation of deformation conditions, and FTIR-spectroscopy. In addition to the field-based study, experiments will be performed in our solid medium deformation laboratory.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with experience in field work and interests in deformation and reaction microstructures, deformation processes, mineralogy, petrology, and fluid-rock interaction. Preference will be given to candidates with documented previous experience in various microbeam techniques, EBSD-analysis, spectroscopy, and thermodynamic modeling using pseudo-section calculations.
The successful applicant will work in an interdisciplinary team of petrologists and structural geologists in Tromsų, together with partner institutions in Switzerland, Germany, Australia, and the USA.
Qualified individuals need to have a Ph.D. in Geosciences at the time of appointment. The appointment will be for a period of 3 years and is available immediately. The salary range is around 400“000 NOK per year.
Informal enquiries and/or applications containing a full C.V., names and details of two professional referees should be addressed to Professor Holger Stunitz (e-mail holger.stunitz@uit.no, tel: +47 77 63 31 17).
Evaluation of applications will start May 15th, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled.
