Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences
University of British Columbia

Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate
Hydrogeology/Reactive Transport Modelling

The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Research Associate in the field of reactive transport modelling. The successful applicant will conduct research for collaborative projects between the University of British Columbia (Dr. Ulrich Mayer) and the University of New Brunswick (Dr. Kerry MacQuarrie). The work will involve the modelling of natural systems constrained by available hydrogeochemical data sets, and the further development of the existing reactive transport code MIN3P-NWMO to extend the capabilities and efficiency of the model. Initially, the model development will include the implementation of multicomponent diffusion, electrochemical migration, surface complexation including electrostatic effects, anion exclusion, and enhanced diffusion through the diffusive double layer. The successful applicant is also expected to contribute to the management and direction of a modelling group currently including 2 PDFs and 4 PhD students.

Candidates with a quantitative background in hydrogeology and geochemistry are encouraged to apply. A Ph.D., strong programming skills, and experience in the development and application of multicomponent reactive transport models are required. The appointment will begin as soon as a qualified scientist has been identified.

The salary will depend on the successful candidate's skills and experience. However the minimum salary for a Research Associate is $51,140.82 CDN per annum.

Applications should be addressed to Dr. K. Ulrich Mayer and emailed to eoshr@eos.ubc.ca by January 31, 2012. Applications should include a CV and the names, e-mails, and phone numbers of three referees.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. All qualified persons are encouraged to apply. We especially welcome applications from members of visible minority groups, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities. Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
