Postdoctoral Position in The Role of the Microscopic Properties of Aggregates in Controlling Asphalt Mixture Durability and Sustainability in the Irish Road Network

University College Cork (UCC) invites applications for a 22-month postdoctoral position in applied petrology. The position is based in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences and is funded by Science Foundation Ireland's Research Centre in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG).

The successful candidate will be working with the StART (Stone Aggregate Research Team) based in UCC, examining the affinity between different minerals and a bituminous binder. This will be achieved using multiple state of the art technologies, including Raman spectroscopy, FTIR and SEM methods. It is expected that the candidates have a background in mineralogy/petrography and are familiar with spectrographic methodologies.

The goal of this project is to understand why certain minerals/materials, that are present in the most common Irish roadstone aggregates form a more cohesive bond with bituminous binders. By understanding this property, it is hoped that sustainable asphalt can be designed to maintain integrity over their proposed lifetime.

This position will allow the successful candidate to gain insight into the infrastructure industry in Ireland but will also provide opportunities to mix with other researchers in both UCC and in the wider iCRAG research community.

Duration: 22 months.
Salary: €39,522 - €46,906, depending on experience and qualifications.
Start date: November 2022.

Qualifications: a PhD in applied petrology or a related field is required. Experience using Raman spectroscopy, FTIR or SEM methods would be beneficial. A good command of spoken and written English is essential. A publication record commensurate with career stage is also expected.

To apply: e-mail a complete academic CV, including a list of publications, a statement of research interests, and the names and contact details of 2 academic referees to Dr. Patrick Meere (p.meere@ucc.ie), with "StART postdoctoral position" in the subject line. Consideration of the applications will begin immediately and continue until 12 noon, Friday, September 9th, 2022. For additional information on the project, please contact Dr Patrick Meere. UCC is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to gender balance, diversity, and inclusion.
