The Department of Earth System Science and Policy (see http://essp.und.edu) at the University of North Dakota invites applications for two faculty openings at the level of assistant professor with a preferred start date of January 11, 2010. Successful candidates will be expected to work across disciplinary boundaries in a collegial environment. The Department also houses the Northern Great Plains Center for People and the Environment. The Center's vision is to use science and policy research, application development, training and outreach to provide benefits to North Dakota and the Northern Great Plains region (see http://www.umac.org).

Faculty Position in Environmental Economics: The successful candidate will have an exceptional record as an interdisciplinary scientist and educator, and will be creative in linking academia with practice. Preference will be given to candidates with a commitment to working with scientists across disciplinary boundaries to develop innovative methods, approaches and analysis for policy and decision making in the coupled human-environment system. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in and experience with issues surrounding valuation of ecosystem services, and providing theoretical and applied approaches to coupled economic and biophysical modeling frameworks. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching core and elective courses that link economics with Earth System Science.

Faculty Position in Land System Science: The successful candidate will have an exceptional record as an interdisciplinary scientist and educator, and will be creative in linking academia with practice. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Geography, Geology or Earth Sciences, and ability to apply these disciplines to land systems science with particular emphasis on agriculture, grasslands and wetlands, and issues of concern in the Northern Great Plains. The successful candidate will also demonstrate interest in and experience with remote sensing of land systems. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in teaching the ESSP core course on the Geosphere and Earth Observation.

Candidates must have a PhD in an appropriate discipline, thrive in an interdisciplinary environment, and be capable of planning and executing collaborative projects. Positions are full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track. A successful history of external funding is a strong advantage. Responsibilities include serving the public and the academic community, undertaking significant scholarly activity, teaching at the graduate level, and advising and supervising students.
