Introduction

UNIL is a leading international teaching and research institution, with over 5,000 employees and 17,000 students split between its Dorigny campus, CHUV and Epalinges. As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition, and responsibility.

Presentation

The Institute of Earth Sciences is looking for a graduate assistant in 3D slope mass movement analysis.

Job information

Expected start date in position: 01.11.22 or upon agreement
Contract length: 1 year, renewable 2 x 2 years, maximum 5 years
Activity rate: 80 %
Workplace: Institute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Geosciences and Environment, University of Lausanne

Your responsibilities

50% of the activity rate (at least) will be dedicated to the PhD student personal research for the realisation of his / her PhD thesis which will consist of 3D ground motion analysis by data processing and mechanical simulation. In a first step, the research will be dedicated to the analysis of point clouds to extract spatial properties such as discontinuities, discontinuities surfaces, volumes, etc., and to characterize them to extrapolate them at depth. In a second step, stochastic and optimisation models will be used to evaluate the stability in mechanical terms of the defined volumes and to predict the movements. Case studies will be investigated in the field.

50% of the activity rate (maximum) will be devoted to the institution. The candidate will actively participate in the various research projects of the group and will be able to participate in practical work in the field of slope movements, as well as in the supervision of two field camps dedicated to the analysis of ground movements.

Your qualifications

The candidate should be interested in geosciences and in particular, in ground motion phenomena (risk) and have a solid programming background (C (C++), Matlab, graphical interfacing, possibly Fortran, other languages such as Python are welcome), but also in physics and mathematics. He/she should have basic knowledge of geosciences and fieldwork or be committed to acquire it quickly. Good spatial vision skills and knowledge of 3D computer visualisation are recommended.

The profiles sought are physicist, geologist with good numeric knowledge, civil or environmental engineer.

What the position offers you

We offer a nice working place in a multicultural, diverse, and dynamic academic environment. Opportunities for professional training, a lot of activities and other benefits to discover.
