Post-doc position in Geophysics with focus on
hardrock seismic exploration

at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden

Application no later than 2013-05-31.

The Department of Earth Sciences consists of four sub-departments: Geophysics, Solid Earth Geology, Paleontology and Air, Water and Landscape Sciences. Research areas within Geophysics include earthquake seismology, applied geophysics (reflection seismology and electromagnetic methods) and geodynamics. The geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, including the Swedish Deep Drilling Program (SDDP), mineral exploration and geological modeling of major mineral belts, geological storage of CO2, sitting and/or monitoring of nuclear waste repositories, geohazards and development of electromagnetic instruments for shallow and deep studies. The program is also expanding its research activities towards urban areas. The geophysics program runs its own ~ 500-channel (cabled and wireless) seismic acquisition system and uses modern processing software Further information can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se.

We are seeking a motivated candidate with a good track of scientific publications and a strong interest in new research ideas who has a PhD degree in geophysics. The applicant's PhD degree should not have been obtained more than three years prior to the application date. The PhD can be older than three years if there are special circumstances. Such special circumstances can be periods of sick leave, parental leave etc., which are deducted from the three-year period.

The candidate, in collaboration with other researchers from the program, is expected to acquire combined surface and down-hole controlled-source and passive seismic data in a seismically active mining site in Sweden for various objectives. One in particular is a comparison between the active source and passive seismic data to provide insight on the potentials and challenges of these methods for imaging and characterizing complex geological structures in the hardrock/crystalline environment. The candidate will also tale part in the development and application of a 3C land streamer system currently being developed by the program.
