The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. The research in meteorology focuses mainly on the physical processes in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer, the lowest 100-1000 m of the atmosphere. Research areas includes basic process understanding in the boundary layer over sea, ice and land, but also includes more applied research on wind energy or dispersion modelling. Within the program is also research focusing natural disasters, glaciology and modelling processes in the climate system. Teaching responsibilities are primarily within the Bachelor and Master Programmes in meteorology (Bachelor and Master Programmes in physics with the specialization on meteorology) but includes also several courses also at Aquatic and Environmental Engineering. Duties/Project description:

The purpose of the project is to quantify the importance of air-sea interaction on atmospheric rivers to develop better predictions of extreme events in the coastal zone. Atmospheric rivers are long narrow bands of large integrated water vapor transport in the troposphere. At land fall they are usually associated with extreme conditions in terms of wind and precipitation.

Particularly the focus of the PhD project will be on the feedback of the coastal interaction processes and the dynamics of the atmosphere. The coastal zone is a complex and important area in the climate system, here is a dynamic interaction between land, sea and atmosphere. Gradients in surface friction and temperature also result in mesoscale circulation systems interacting with the dynamics of the larger scales. For atmospheric rivers at land fall the uplift of the moisture-rich air in the atmospheric rivers cause high precipitation totals, the mechanisms, however, needs further analysis. We will use atmosphere-wave-ocean fully coupled models in order to understand and describe feedbacks between coastal processes and dynamics of the atmosphere (in particular impact on atmospheric rivers).


The applicant shall have a university science degree in meteorology or similar. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills. Previous experience of programming and numerical modelling is considered a merit.

The holder of a Ph.D.-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of position (max 20%). The applicant must be eligible for Ph.D. studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies. Local guidelines at Uppsala University determine the salary levels.
