Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

Assistant Professor/Research Associate in Geohydrological Modeling

at the Department of Earth Sciences

The Subsurface Hydrology at the Department of Earth Sciences has a research focus on modeling and related experimental characterization of (i) heterogeneity and uncertainty effects in subsurface flow and tranport as well as (ii) flow and tranport of multiphase and coupled systems. Important application areas include geological storage of CO2, environmental pollution and energy studies.

The succesful applicant to this position is expected to carry out research in the general area of geohydrological modeling, as well as modeling of carbon dioxide injection in deep geological formations. The latter is a research area that is one of the new focus areas at the Department and the holder of the position will have the opportunity to collaborate with and work within the newly launched large scale integrating EU FP7 CO2 project MUSTANG (www.co2mustang.eu) coordinated by Uppsala University. While this is primarily a modeling position, experimental work supporting and linked to the modeling can be included.

Appointment period: The position can be held for a maximum of 4 years.

Nature of duties: This is principally a research appointment but will also involve teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervision of students at postgraduate level.

Qualifications required: To qualify for appointment as Assistant Professor/Research Associate you must have a PhD or equivalent. Priority is given to applicants who have completed their PhD within 5 years of the application deadline. Furthermore, according to Uppsala University's general employment regulations, it is also a requirement that teachers possess the necessary skills and qualifications to carry out their duties proficiently.

The ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement.

Criteria for ranking: In ranking qualified applicants particular importance will be given to scientific proficiency. Applicants should have strong skills in modeling of geohydrological processes as well as in-depth knowledge of the physics of porous media. Scientific proficiency in at least one of the following areas relevant to carbon sequestration modeling is valuable; modeling reactive transport, modeling transport in coupled (such as coupled THMC) systems and modeling of multiphase flow and transport. Documented ability to combine theory and experiment as well as earlier experience in modeling of carbon dioxide transport is an advantage.

In filling this position, the university aims to recruit the person who, in a combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department and programme.

Criteria for ranking, other skills: The ability to initiate, plan and organize research in cooperation with other researchers in project team is of importance and will be accorded weight. The ability to cooperate with the surrounding community and to inform people about research and development work will also be considered.

Ability to inform people about research and development work is demonstrated by popular scientific activities, for example participating in extramural education, publishing popular scientific papers and participating in public discussions on topics of education and research.

Personal circumstances that may be of positive relevance to the application, for example parental leave, should be mentioned in the list of qualifications (CV).

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff and women are especially invited to apply for this position.
