Perth is the centre of the Australian mining and petroleum industries and the School Earth and Geographical Sciences has a large teaching and research program working closely with the local resource industry. The Goodeve Lectureship is being established within the School to honour the achievements of geophysicist, Peter Goodeve. We are seeking an early career high achieving geoscientist with expertise in geophysics. The successful applicant will have experience in using geophysics to address geological questions relevant to exploration for mineral, petroleum or groundwater resources and will be expected to work with other geoscientists involved in applied earth science research of relevance to the resources sector. The role requires a highly motivated geoscientist with a PhD or equivalent scholarly attainment in Geoscience and the strong desire and capability to undertake applied research at the geology-geophysics interface applicable to the minerals, petroleum and/or groundwater industry. The incumbent will be expected to conduct research at the highest level and apply for external research funds from academic and industrial grant providers. The appointee will also be expected to recruit and supervise research students and work effectively in a team environment within the School. The lectureship is expected to contribute substantially to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching that will complement current teaching in geophysics. Applicants with teaching experience are requested to submit a teaching portfolio as part of their application. Achieving International Excellence ROLE STATEMENT Goodeve Lectureship is being established to honour the achievements of geophysicist, Peter Goodeve who was responsible for organizing and managing the first systematic aeromagnetic and radiometric surveys of the Australian continent, undertaken by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (now Geoscience Australia) during the 1950's and 1960's. These surveys laid the foundation for increased mineral and petroleum exploration in the 1960's and 1970's and led to many important discoveries. The role requires a highly motivated geoscientist with a PhD in geology or geophysics with the ability to conduct high-level teaching and research at the geology-geophysics interface on subjects relevant to exploration for mineral, petroleum or groundwater resources. The successful candidate will undertake both field- and laboratory-based research projects and also provide geophysical support to research projects led by other academic staff. The incumbent will work closely with various established research groups within and outside of the host School and University, in particular the Centre for Exploration Targeting, WA Geothermal Centre for Excellence and soon to be created Centre for Petroleum Geoscience. The preferred area of expertise is potential-field geophysics as used in resource exploration, but individuals with experience working with other forms of geophysical data are also strongly encouraged to apply. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Teaching of geologically oriented geophysics at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Initiating and undertaking minerals, petroleum or groundwater industry-relevant research, related to the geological interpretation of geophysical data.
