The Department of Earth Sciences seeks to employ a

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Structural Geology and Tectonics

This position offers an opportunity for a highly motivated, dynamic individual who has the potential to emerge as one of the future leaders in structural geology and tectonics in Southern Africa. Applications are invited from candidates with research and teaching experience in field-based structural geology and tectonics and the ability to deliver high-quality instruction of introductory and advanced structural geology as well as bedrock mapping courses.

Key duties:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in structural geology and tectonics as well as introductory courses in geology as required;
  • Planning and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate field work and administration of modules;
  • Develop and lead an internationally competitive, externally funded research program;
  • Supervising research projects of undergraduate and postgraduate students commensurate with level of appointment;
  • Publishing research results in international journals relevant to the broader research field;
  • Service delivery at departmental level commensurate with experience.

Minimum Requirements for appointment at Senior Lecturer level:

  • PhD in Earth Sciences related to structural geology and tectonics;
  • In-depth knowledge of field-based structural geology and tectonics;
  • Proven record of teaching in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment;
  • Demonstrated experience of successful postgraduate research supervision.
  • Proven record of securing research funding from external sources.
  • A track record of publications in international peer-reviewed accredited journals in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment;
  • Experience in departmental academic governance and curriculum development would be an advantage;
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.

Minimum Requirements for appointment at Lecturer level:

  • MSc in Earth Sciences related to structural geology and tectonics - a PhD in Earth Sciences related to structural geology and tectonics would be an advantage;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of field-based structural geology and tectonics;
  • Proven record of teaching in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment;
  • A record of active research and research dissemination, e.g., by publications in international peer-reviewed accredited journals and through presentations at conferences;
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise postgraduate research;
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.

Recommendations:

  • Experience in structural geology and tectonics of high-grade crystalline environments;
  • Experience in modern approaches to structural analysis and modelling;
  • Experience in modern methods of metamorphic petrology.
  • Potential research collaborations with the current Earth Sciences staff members in areas of economic geology, geochemistry, geochronology and petroleum geology;
  • Experience in departmental academic governance and curriculum development.
