The Faculty of Science invites applications for the Headship of the School of Geosciences at the University of Witwatersrand.
Geoscience is one of nine Schools in the Faculty of Science. The School has specialists in several fields (e.g. Geology, Economic Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry) and strong, collaborative links with industry.
The Head of School is expected to provide academic vision and leadership as well as managerial coordination for different units and programmes required to maintain and build on the School's position of excellence. S/he will have attained sufficient academic and/or professional standing to command the respect and confidence of the members of the School, will possess high-level managerial skills, and technical/mathematical skills/vision to drive the School to be data driven and quantitative.
The headship will involve the overall management of the School, namely coordinating the teaching, research and administrative activities; planning and promotion of academic activities in the wider community; human resources recruitment and management; financial and infrastructure resource management. The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of School for a fixed term of five years (with a possibility of a second term), and will have a place in the school as an academic staff after the period served as Head of School. Teaching of courses during the term of office is not required but is an option, and the Head is expected to continue with his/her research activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: An appropriate PhD and administration experience preferably within a University is required.
