Lecturer/Senior Lecturer specializing in Mining Geology/Remote Sensing/Tectonics in the School of Geosciences, University of the Witwatersrand

The School of Geosciences invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time permanent academic position at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level to commence on 02/01/2021. The School enjoys a high international research profile, ranking within the top 150 Earth Science schools globally (2020 QS Subject Rankings) with strong multidisciplinary research programmes in geology, geophysics, geochemistry and has close links to the Evolutionary Studies Institute. The School has a strong focus on the Precambrian geology of South Africa and other parts of Africa, with particular strengths being in geophysics, geochemistry, petrology and economic geology.

The School co-hosts the national DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA) and leads the international Africa Array Geophysics Programme. The School has world-class research equipment and infrastructure to support cross-disciplinary research and teaching, including a range of cutting-edge microbeam instrumentation (Cameca SX5 FE EPMA, Resolution-Element II LA-ICP-MS, Tescan TIMA and remote 1280 HR SIMS connection), state-of-the-art whole-rock geochemical facilities (XRF, solution Q-ICPMS, a metal-free, ultra-clean traditional and non-traditional isotope lab), as well as extensive geohydrological and geophysical equipment (https://www.wits.ac.za/geosciences/about-us/facilities/).

The School seeks to appoint a candidate who will complement its existing research strengths and applied geology teaching foci. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven expertise in mining geology, ore-body modelling, remote sensing and/or tectonics/geodynamics. The level of appointment and starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

A successful candidate will be required to teach specialist courses in mining geology, remote sensing and geodynamics at undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate levels. She/he is expected to also establish a research programme and publish research results in internationally accredited journals, as well as raise research funds through competitive grants and attract postgraduate students.

Applicants must provide evidence of:

  • A PhD in geological sciences
  • Specialisation in one or more of the designated fields
  • Good communication and written skills
  • Industry experience and 3D modelling experience will be advantageous

The post is available at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level; the appointment at the more senior level/s will be based on evidence of a sustained track record of post-PhD academic research/publications and a teaching portfolio and/or suitable industry experience.
