Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Halcrow Group Ltd are a multi disciplinary engineering consultancy covering all aspects of Civil Engineering. The geotechnics and engineering geology team in Tees Valley is Halcrow's largest in the North East and has a leading reputation amongst internal and external clients. The team has grown organically over the last four years and currently comprises of seven permanent staff. A significant committed workload beyond 2009 and a number of significant prospects currently being pursued provides both an opportunity and necessitates further expansion of the team. Existing committed project work is mostly UK based for several major clients in the transportation industries. The geotechnical and engineering geology skill group strategy is to continue growth of the team through capitalisation on business opportunities with existing projects and clients and also to expand the business to new worldwide markets and clients requiring geotechnical services.

The principal function of this position is to join a proactive team and apply an extensive and diverse range of core skills to assist cost effective delivery of project work and to contribute to the senior resource base taking responsibility for effective project management and project delivery as appropriate.

The priorities of this role include:

  • to perform project tasks to an agreed scope, programme and budget
  • ensure effective communication with the project team and client
  • identify and offer value added to bids, projects, team skills and deliverables
  • to perform at a high level, must be a good team player, well organised and able to make strategic project decisions to ensure delivery to time, budget and standard
  • check and review work of other professional staff
  • proven experience of leading a team

The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:

  • must be able to work independently on assignments with limited supervision but can also work as part of a team
  • has extensive and diversified knowledge of geotechnical design principles and practice (and related fields).
  • can manage/ supervise medium/ large projects or several small ones.
  • can carries out complex or novel assignments requiring development of new or improved techniques/procedures. check and review work of other professional staff
  • supervise and direct other staff members
