Hokkaido University, Japan
PhD opportunities in Environmental
Engineering
PhD scholarships are available in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Hokkaido University. The successful applicant will join the research group in hydraulic engineering laboratory at Graduate School of Engineering in Hokkaido University. The hydraulic laboratory group performs research in several areas of river engineering experimentally and numerically to study the hydrodynamics and the sediment transport in the rivers and the effect of sediment transport on river morphodynamics.
There is a strong focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where numerical methods for flows are coupled with sediment transport models and morhodynamics. The applicant will work on implementing, adjusting and testing existing models and numerical algorithms developed at the department. The ultimate goal will be improvement the existing computational tools for handling with river related problems. By developing these models, the candidate is expected to apply them for the simulation of different aspects in rivers.
Applicant must hold a Master degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, or other relevant area of technology and science. Applicants should have a strong background and interest in applied mathematics, fluid mechanics and numerical techniques. It is recommended that the candidate have good knowledge of turbulence modelling. Good programming skills in Fortran is a prerequisite. Knowledge about parallelisation is a plus.
