The State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection (SKLGP), Chengdu University of Technology, located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Southwest China, is a world-class institute and China's only NATIONAL level laboratory focusing on geohazard prevention, engineering geology and geotechnology. SKLGP has very advanced instruments and equipment with a total value of about 1.2 billion RMB, which could fully support all kinds of geohazard and geotechnical research, including on site and laboratory tests, monitoring, geotechnical parameter tests, physical and numerical modelling system, GIS and RS analysis system etc. In the past five years, SKLGP has been in charge of 810 international, national and provincial research projects, receiving the research grant of 6.6 billion RMB in total. Through the implementation of the research projects, excellent results have been achieved: 3 first prizes and 2 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 prize of China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, 1 prize of Gold Medal of National Patent Achievement. SKLGP has 78 regular staff, 31 of whom are professors with the average age of only 41 years old. This young but talented team has published more than 50 monographs and 1326 papers, including a number of papers on high-ranking international ISI journals, i.e. Nature Geosciences. The research results have been presented in more than 60 conferences, including 35 keynote speeches and invited presentations. Through leading in international projects and organizing a series of international conferences, international post-graduate students training course (LARAM-ASIA), International Research Association on Large Landslides (iRALL), SKLGP has played an important role in the international collaboration between China and other countries. 1. Summary of the role
SKLGP invites applicants for postdoctoral positions (1-3 years) in the field of Geohazards, Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering. The positions are part of a research project to develop innovative methods for early recognition, monitoring, warning as well as risk assessment and management of potential large-scale geohazards in southwest China, funded by NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) and SKLGP. The successful applicants will contribute to an enhanced understanding of the failure and dynamic mechanism of different types of landslides and the consequent secondary geohazards, as well as of advanced early warning and forecasting tools and methods.
2. Qualifications and experience required
- Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. education at the time the position starts, or have equivalent experience.
- Develop novel tools and methods for landslide early recogintion, monitoring and early warning that can be employed by a variety of end users;
- Demonstrate the ability to carry out physical and numerical modeling of landslide initiation and dynamic runout;
- Work closely with other team members to integrate regional and local-scale geological information using GIS, into the modeling effort;
- Develop new methods for landslide risk assessment and management;
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently, using your own initiative, and as part of a team;
- Write and present the results of the research, both independently and collaboratively, for submission to high-ranking international peer-reviewed journals and other publications as appropriate.
Essential skills and qualifications
- Ph.D in Geohazards, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Geophysics, Earth Observation, or other related subjects;
- Good knowledge of landslide investigation, mapping and mechanism analysis;
- Knowledge of using GIS and RS (espeically UAV, InSAR, LiDAR data);
- Demonstrable experience with quantitative topographic analysis and manipulation of spatial data (e.g., digital elevation models, remotely-sensed imagery) using a geographic information system;
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Desirable skills and qualifications
- Knowledge of, or experience with, patterns and processes of landslide occurrence;
- Demonstrable skills of geotechnical or geophysical tests;
- Experience in numerical modeling and programming (e.g. in Matlab, R, Phyton).
The applicants do not necessarily have to meet all above required experience and skills. Applicants with strong experience in some fields listed above are welcome to apply.
3. Other information
The successful candidate will be recruited at the professor grade and the annual salary will be 180,000RMB (equaling to around 27,700$ or 24,800€). The accommodation cost will be covered by SKLGP. The local living cost is 36,000RMB on average. The successful candidates are expected to start from September 2016.
