This is a high profile role, acting as the London Underground's Head of Profession authority for Earth Structures.
About us
From Upminster in the east to Ealing Broadway in the west, Amersham in the north to Wimbledon in the south, the 240km of earth structures plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and functionality of London's tube system. Now we're looking for a Principal Engineer to lead a team of geotechnical engineers responsible for the condition appraisal, maintenance and upgrade of the earth structures asset base and the provision of specialist geotechnical advice across the business.
Your role
As the Principal Engineer for Earth Structures you will ensure your knowledge and geotechnical engineering experience is used effectively throughout the London Underground. You'll also analyse complex data and take an integrated approach to producing effective solutions. Working closely with the relevant team members across London Underground, you'll ensure that Earth Structure upgrade works are delivered following agreed standards and into service.
Specifically you will:
- Be the Head of Profession engineering authority for Civil Engineering Earth Structures and ensure all engineering standards are met throughout the London Underground.
- Manage a team of geotechnical engineers who will undertake the condition appraisal, maintenance and upgrade of the earth structures asset base.
- Ensure that the appropriate controls and mitigation are in place to safeguard the safety and integrity of the railway earth structure assets, at all times as well as being responsible for the review and approval of all geotechnical engineering technical documentation associated with Earth structures.
- Work closely with other relevant engineers throughout a project's lifecycle to ensure that Earth Structure upgrade works are successfully adopted and delivered into service.
What you'll need
Naturally, you'll need significant experience of geotechnical engineering ideally, within the rail sector as well as a broad knowledge of railway engineering and relevant operational and commercial systems. You'll need the presence to negotiate effectively and influence people at all levels - both within London Underground and externally. As a motivational leader, you'll also have the character to inspire a range of people to guarantee delivery.
Explicitly you will have:
- Extensive and proven experience in geotechnical engineering project design, construction and maintenance ideally, within the rail sector.
- Significant experience in a senior management/technical role involving managing large and complex contracts within the rail sector or a closely related industry.
- In-depth knowledge of the geotechnical engineering design and construction process.
- Knowledge of the relevant HSEQ legislation and standards in a railway engineering environment.
