Geographical Information Systems and Environmental Management MSc



This course provides both application skills and systems expertise to prepare you to manage the challenges of applying Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies in the working world. The course reflects recent changes in the marketplace and focuses on the tools and techniques of GIS. It develops a deeper understanding of software structures, spatial data elements and specialist GIS analysis skills.

The course has been specifically designed to examine all aspects of GIS and to develop the tools and skills necessary to apply that knowledge in a variety of environmental contexts. The course benefits from experiences gained through our own commercial GIS projects. Participants will gain hands-on knowledge of a range of GIS systems including the industry standard ArcGIS suite of programs and will learn how to use these systems to solve real world problems and case studies. This suite of programs includes raster and vector mapping tools and advanced geospatial analysis techniques such as Digital Terrain Model mapping and geostatistical analysing. The course also develops your communication, team working and problem solving skills that are highly valued by employers.

The course is flexible and provides you with the opportunity to take optional modules from a range of complimentary disciplines including, environmental assessment, water and environmental management, applied geology and statistics.

The course is highly focused on developing skills and you will learn practical application invaluable in employment. GIS is a technique that is embraced within national and local government, and environmental consultancies and the course will provide postgraduates with a rounded set of skills to take forward into the workplace.
