MSc Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Environmental Management course provides students with both application skills and systems expertise in order to manage the challenges of applying GIS technologies in the working world. The course reflects recent changes in the marketplace and focuses on the tools and techniques of GIS and develops a deeper understanding of software structures, spatial data elements and specialist GIS analysis skills.

The MSc in GIS and Environmental Management has been specifically designed to examine all aspects of GIS and to develop the tools and skills necessary to apply that knowledge in a variety of environmental contexts. The course benefits from experiences gained through the school's own commercial GIS projects. Participants will gain hands-on knowledge of a range of GIS systems including the industry standard ArcGIS suite of programmes and will learn how to use such systems to solve real world problems and case studies. This suite of programmes includes raster and vector mapping tools and advanced geospatial analysis techniques such as Digital Terrain Model mapping and geostatistical analysing. The course also develops the participant's communication, team working and problem solving skills that are highly valued by employers.

Participants will benefit from the course's flexibility and will be provided with the opportunity to take optional modules from a range of complementary disciplines including, environmental assessment, water and environmental management, applied geology and statistics.

The course is strongly skills-based and will offer postgraduates the opportunity to learn practical application expertise which will be invaluable in employment. GIS is a technique that is embraced within national and local government, and environmental consultancies and the course will provide postgraduates with a rounded set of skills to take forward into the workplace
