Petroleum Geoscience MSc
University of Manchester
"Training the next generation of oil finders!"
The Petroleum Geoscience MSc at the University of Manchester offers an innovative and dynamic integrated course programme and world-class teaching and research facilities. The University of Manchester, one of the largest Universities in Europe, has firmly established this course as a centre of excellence for Petroleum Geoscience for both UK and worldwide recruitment.
Geological Society Accredited Degree
The Petroleum Geoscience MSc at Manchester is the first Masters course to be fully accredited by the Geological Society of London, for a period of 5 years from 1st June, 2007. Students on course and graduating this year will be the first cohort to be deemed to have an accredited degree.
World Class Facilities
Manchester University is at the forefront of Petroleum Geoscience research, and recent investment in facilities, including new workstation laboratories and world class computing facilities, Lidar for digital outcrop analysis, 3D visualisation suite, and a new petrophysics laboratory, ensures we can offer the best environment for teaching and research.
Dedicated Tuition
With small class sizes around 30 we maintain a high staff to student ratio, and courses are exclusively for postgraduate students so that we can offer the highest quality tuition. The academic staff have considerable oil industry experience or consult for the oil industry, and the teaching team has a very strong group of external lecturers, all active consultants or employees in the oil industry. One full week is taught by senior staff from BP, and Shell also sponsor the course and offer teaching and research links.
Strong links with industry
The University of Manchester has strong links with the oil industry, and throughout the year companies visit to give technical talks, give careers presentations and interview. MSc research projects are undertaken on data supplied by the oil industry, and most students have the opportunity to undertake the research based in an oil company office. We are one of only four Universities in the UK supported by Schlumberger as part of their academic sponsorship programme.
