Department of Earth Sciences
Institute of Geological Sciences
The appointed candidate will cover research and teaching in the field of tectonics and tectonophysics.
Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act.
In addition, the candidate should hold a doctoral degree in geological sciences and demonstrate an excellent record of research activities on endogenic dynamics with a focus on developing and applying tectonic and tectonophysical concepts through peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate should also have experience in qualitative and quantitative field-based studies supported by analytical methods and numerical modelling. They should have experience acquiring funding for, and carrying out, externally funded research, as well as teaching experience in bachelor and master courses related to geological sciences, including field-based courses. Candidates must have excellent knowledge of German or English and be able to teach in the respective language. Ideally, the appointee will have experience in geodynamic and rheological modelling, as well as a strong background in structural geology, in addition to knowledge of geophysical imaging, geodetic and remote sensing methodologies. Experience in applying artificial intelligence in a geological context will be considered an additional bonus. The appointee will have a record of initiating and undertaking research projects with German and international partners. Previous work in the management and implementation of knowledge and technology transfer endeavors is also desired.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities: We expect the candidate to develop an innovative research program with high international visibility. The successful candidate should combine field-based studies with analytical methods to develop novel tectonic concepts and models. Moreover, the appointee should have proven experience in conducting research that involves large-scale geophysical imaging, geodetic, and remote sensing studies. Some experience in the application of the methods of artificial intelligence to emerging large and complex geological datasets would be an additional asset. The research focus should be the endogenic processes of the solid Earth on all spatial and time scales.
The appointee will be expected to teach BSc (in German) and MSc (in English) courses at the Institute of Geological Sciences, Department of Geosciences, Freie Universität Berlin, as well as to supervise students’ degree projects at all levels, including doctoral students. They will be responsible for planning and conducting excursions and onsite events for the BSc and MSc degree programs. Their work will involve close cooperation with other working groups at the Department of Earth Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin and with relevant research institutions in the Berlin/Potsdam metropolitan region, such as the Geo.X network. Candidates must have a keen interest in acquiring adequate language skills in German or English (as the case may be) within a period of three years from the date of employment.
The new professor will also be expected to teach courses in ways that are sensitive to gender and diversity issues.
Applications should include a CV, copies of all certificates of academic qualification in German or English, a list of publications, a list of courses previously taught and evidence of teaching competence. Please include information on involvement in ongoing and future research endeavors, joint research projects, externally funded projects and, if necessary, language certificates. If applicable, please give information on partnerships with industry, inventions/patents, and spin-offs. All materials, including a personal postal address and email address, must be received no later than June 7th, 2021 preferably electronically. Please indicate the reference code for the position when you submit your materials in one PDF file (maximum 5 MB), to the following address:
