Geoscientist of Mining Engineer (M. Sc.)

The Geoscientist/Mining Engineer is responsible for implementing the following activities related to the topic of "mineral certification and formalization" as part of the development cooperation project "Support to the Regional Certification Mechanism", co-implemented with the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Africa:

Your tasks: 

  • Establishing a local project office in Entebbe, Uganda
  • Technical consulting and supporting Ugandan project partners regarding the institutionalization and implementation of a certification scheme for national supply chains of gold, tin, tantalum and tungsten; this includes, in particular, mine inspections and export certification
  • Technical consulting and supporting government institutions, companies and artisanal and small-scale mining associations in Uganda regarding improved mining practice and management; this activity includes field work in mining areas
  • Organization and implementation of training activities
  • Public outreach activities and promotion of project results
  • Designing, planning and managing subcontracted work by external consultants
  • Coordination with relevant local stakeholders (e. g., donors, civil society, mining associations) in Uganda and in the regional project context (ICGLR)

Your Profile:

  • M.Sc. degree in geosciences, mining engineering or any equivalent degree related to mineral resources
  • Good knowledge of the mining sector and mineral supply chains, preferentially with regards to developing countries 
  • Good comprehension of economic, ecological and social factors and processes in mining
  • Excellent skills in German (level C1)
  • Excellent skills in English (level C1)
  • Excellent organizational skills and high degree of personal flexibility
  • Good communication skills and diplomatic talent
  • Intercultural competence and ability to work in a team
  • Suitable level of personal health and fitness for work in underground mines and in tropical climate

Ideally, you also meet the following requirements:

  • Several years of mining-related work experience, preferentially in developing countries
  • Experience in mine licensing and management procedures
  • Solid knowledge of ore deposits and economic geology

Following a preparatory period in Hannover and Bonn, the Project Geologist/Engineer will be permanently seconded to Entebbe, Uganda. Depending on personal expertise and experience of the candidate, the salary of this position corresponds to either level E13 or E14 according to the collective salary agreement by the German Federal government; an additional tax-free allowance applies for working abroad.
