The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BUNDESANSTALT FÜR GEOWISSENSCHAFTEN UND ROHSTOFFE, BGR) has a vacancy until 30/06/2019 with possibility of continuation for a 

Research Associate (M.Sc.)

Duties and responsibilities:

Collaboration on-site in N'Djamena, Chad, under the umbrella of the technical cooperation project "Sustainable Water Management in the Lake Chad Basin".

  • Technical planning and organization of hydrological and hydrogeological investigations jointly with the local partner
  • Execution and evaluation of hydrogeological investigations
  • Supervision of drilling activities
  • Supervision of laboratory and field equipment
  • Conception and implementation of training measures concerning hydrogeological subjects for scientific and technical personnel of the partner
  • Lead in the preparation of joint technical reports
  • Participation in the technical planning and implementation of the technical cooperation project - Groundwater consultation of the Lake Chad Basin Commission
  • Representation of the project leader

Required qualifications: 

  • University studies (Master or equivalent) in a geoscientific field or comparable with focus on hydrogeology
  • Very good knowledge and many years of professional experience in hydrology and hydrogeology
  • Experience in soil and rock description
  • Good knowledge and professional experience in hydrogeological quantitative methods, hydrochemistry, and geohydraulic
  • Proficiency in German and English (B2-Level)
  • Strong communication and negotiations skills 
  • Ability for interdisciplinary team work and intercultural cooperation
  • Suitability for work in tropical climate

Other (not compulsory but desirable) criteria:

  • Experience in managed aquifer recharge
  • Experience with laboratory tests
  • Knowledge of development policy principles, relations, planning and steering instruments of German development cooperation
  • Good knowledge of French

This position is classified in the 13 grade of the Collective Agreement for the Public Services (TVöD). After a preparation period in Hanover and Bonn-Röttgen the position holder shall be deployed permanently in N'Djamena, Chad, which will be remunerated with an extra pay for working abroad.
