The FEDERAL INSTITUTE FOR GEOSCIENCES AND NATURAL RESOURCES (BGR) is planning to recruit a 

Mining Engineer, Geoscientist, Environmental Scientist or Economist (M.Sc.)

for a fixed term contract until December 31, 2020. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work as a technical expert out of the BGR office in Kinshasa, DR Congo, as part of the technical cooperation project "Strengthening of control in the mining sector of the DR Congo". On the background of German-Congolese development cooperation, the project supports the technical services of the ministry of mines, mining cooperatives, civil society and mineral supply chain stakeholders. The project focuses on establishing mining standards and certifying responsible mining practice in artisanal and small-scale mining. The project further seeks to improve control and due diligence in mineral supply chains (gold, tantalum, tin, tungsten, copper-cobalt). The project is implemented by a team of five BGR experts plus local project staff at different offices in Kinshasa and in the eastern DRC.

Specific tasks of the advertised position include:

  • Providing advice, training and support for the technical services of the DRC ministry of mines, relevant supply chain stakeholders (in particular, mining cooperatives) and civil society with regards to developing and enforcing responsible mining standards, certification and mine inspections; this task may include occasional fieldwork in mining areas in the eastern DRC;
  • Supporting the development and application of geoscientific tools to improve the control of mineral supply chains associated with artisanal and small-scale mining, including the use of remote sensing methods;
  • Providing advice to and facilitating multi-stakeholder consultations on certification, mining standards and mine inspections in the DRC mining sector;
  • Public relations management and dissemination of project results;
  • Organizing training events, workshops and conferences.

Qualification:

  • Master's degree in mining engineering or geosciences; or in environmental sciences or economics related to raw materials
  • Good knowledge of the economic, ecological and social impacts of and processes in mining
  • Good knowledge of the mining sector with regards to mine inspections, certification and/or auditing
  • Knowledge of development cooperation in the mining sector context
  • Intercultural competence and ability to work in a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good language skills in German, English and French (level C1)
  • Suitable level of personal health and fitness for work in underground mines and in a tropical climate

Ideally, the candidate also has expertise and experience in the following:

  • Mining-related work experience, preferentially in developing countries
  • Good knowledge of working with and applying remote sensing data
  • Good knowledge of working with GIS software (preferentially QGIS)

Following a preparatory period in Hannover and, if necessary, Bonn-Röttgen, the successful candidate will be permanently seconded to Kinshasa, DR Congo. The salary of this position corresponds to the E13 level according to the public service collective salary agreement by the German Federal government and additional allowance for working abroad.
