The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BUNDESANSTALT FÜR GEOWISSENSCHAFTEN UND ROHSTOFFE, BGR) has a vacancy until 30.06.2022 for a 

Research Associate

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development and scientific editing of hydrogeological maps within the framework of the international cooperation project "Groundwater Consulting of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (CBLT)" 
  • Interpretation and assessment of groundwater-related data and maps
  • Development of policy recommendations for groundwater management
  • Execution and evaluation of hydrogeological investigations
  • Supervision of drilling activities
  • Subject-related data analysis using scientific methods and development of GIS methods
  • Conception and implementation of training measures for partner institutions
  • Presentation and publication of the results

Required qualifications

  • University degree (Master or equivalent) in a geoscientific field or comparable
  • Very good knowledge in hydrogeology
  • Good knowledge in the interpretation and evaluation of geoscientific data
  • Practical experience in the application of GIS tools (QGIS) and database applications in combination with spatial data
  • Experience in soil and rock description
  • Proficiency in German and English (B2)
  • Interdisciplinary team and communication skills, ability for intercultural cooperation
  • Suitability for work in tropical climate
  • Willingness for longer stays in N'Djamena (up to 4 months per year in total)

Optional selection criteria

  • Good knowledge of R and/or Matlab or similar
  • Experience in related fields (soil science, remote sensing, geophysics, hydrology)
  • Knowledge in the regionalization of geoscientific data
  • Knowledge of development policy principles, relations, planning and steering instruments of German development cooperation
  • Good knowledge of French language

The place of work is Berlin. This post is classified in the 13 grade of the Collective Agreement for the Public Services (TVöD).
