The FEDERAL INSTITUTE FOR GEOSCIENCES AND NATURAL RESOURCES (BUNDESANSTALT FÜR GEOWISSENSCHAFTEN UND ROHSTOFFE, BGR) invites applications for a permanent position as

scientific staff member

Tasks:

Clay mineralogical investigations in the frame of high-level radioactive waste disposal research

  • Characterizing the pore space of host rocks and barrier materials
  • Developing advanced models to describe water mobility in barrier systems
  • Modelling the interaction of anions and cations with mineral surfaces
  • Investigating petrophysical parameters of host rocks and barrier systems
  • Investigating the surface charge of minerals including electrokinetics
  • Reporting of results in internal reports, official statements, publications and presentations as well as representing the working group in public 

Requirements profile:

  • Master- or diploma-degree in either geosciences, mineralogy, physics, chemistry (or similar)
  • High level of experience with respect to characterizing the micro- and nano-scaled pore space of barrier materials such as bentonite, shale, and salt
  • Advanced knowledge and experience concerning models describing the interaction of different anions and cations with mineral surfaces
  • Abilitiy of modelling of petrophysical parameters of bentonites, shales, and salt (e.g. hydraulic conductivity, anion- and cation diffusion, electrical conductivity, swelling pressure, gas permeability)
  • Experience  with respect to techniques of modelling chemical processes at the mineral surface
  • Ability to utilise programming languages 
  • Very good written and spoken German and English (comparable to level B2)
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook 
  • Proven team working skills 
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to understand complex issues

Ideally, you will also meet the following requirements:

  • Experience with developing or improving models describing the mobility of water and dissolved ions
  • Experience concerning the investigation of surface charge of minerals and electrokinetics at mineral surfaces

The place of work is Hannover. This post is classified in remuneration group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Services (TVöD).
