with 67%-part-time job, limited to 31.12.2019, Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU
reference code: TRR227 A1 2018 (subject to the authorization)

The Collaborative Research Center TRR 170 "Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets (LATP)" offers a new doctoral position on the topic of "Formation and evolution of crust on early Earth". The position is guaranteed until 12/2019. The TRR 170 focusses on improving our understanding of the late accretion history of the terrestrial bodies in the inner Solar System including the Earth and the Moon from about 4.5 to 3.8 billion years ago. One of its main goals is to develop quantitative models for the evolution of the terrestrial planets in the relevant time interval. These models will be tested by means of geochemical, petrological, geological and geophysical constraints.

Job description: Topic: Formation and evolution of crust on early Earth. The aim of this project is to investigate thermodynamic pathways in the mantle and feedbacks between mantle material properties and crust formation to investigate the coupled, earliest evolution of Earth’s oceanic and proto-continental crust. For this, a thermodynamically consistent convection code for compressible mantle flow will be used and an improved mantle mineral physics (and related phase transitions) model will be developed.

Requirements: Diploma/M.Sc. in geosciences or related field.

Desirable: A background in mineralogy, petrology or geophysics is desired together with basic knowledge of programming (ideally with Fortran and Matlab).

All applications quoting the reference code should be addressed no later than July 23rd, 2018 to Prof. Dr. Lena Noack: lena.noack@fu-berlin.de or by post to
