The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1.260 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the "System Earth" and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany's largest science organization.
Within the new research group CLEAR www.gfz-potsdam.de/en/wg/clear/, located in Section 3.6 "Chemistry and Physics of Earth Materials", we endeavor to understand large scale geological processes that operate deep inside planets. Our approach is to recreate high pressure-temperature conditions in the laboratory and examine various physical properties of minerals and rocks in situ using state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who wants to earn a PhD in geosciences and we are inviting applications for a
This PhD student (m/f) will develop an expertise in spectroscopic measurements in diamond anvil cells. The primary research focus will be on the pressure- and temperature-dependence of near-IR and visible absorption spectra of minerals that constitute (or are related to) the Earth's mantle. Such characterization allows extracting information on the electronic structure and transport properties of minerals in the deep Earth.
The dissertation will be submitted to the University of Potsdam.

You can expect a very diverse and challenging job in an international work environment that is characterized by exciting research projects. The compatibility of work and family life is of particular concern to the GFZ. Therefore, it offers the opportunity for flexible working time and workplaces. Moreover, there is a kindergarten located on the research campus.
The GFZ is a partner with Geo.X (www.geo-x.net), and as such it is well connected with other geoscience institutions in Potsdam und Berlin. Geo.X forms the largest regional cluster of geoscientific expertise in Europe and offers excellent opportunities for cooperation and development.
