The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1.260 employees (including visiting scientist), the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the "System Earth" and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany's largest science organization.
For Section 2.3 Geomagnetismus we invite applications for a
The Earth's upper atmosphere in the altitude range of ca. 100-600 km is partially ionized. The region is called "ionosphere" and has been an active area of research for many decades. Even today, a reliable forecast of "ionospheric weather" is difficult, as a large part of its short-term (day-to-day and hour-to-hour) variability remains unexplained.
This project aims to identify sources of ionospheric short-term variability. A special focus is to determine the role of planetary-scale waves that propagate to the ionosphere from below. Applications are invited for a three-year PhD position to carry out research investigations for the project. The position is funded as a part of German-Japanese joint project within the framework of DFG-JSPS cooperation program.
The research will be conducted at GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany and at the University of Potsdam. The dissertation will be submitted to the University of Potsdam.
