The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1,260 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the "System Earth" and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany's largest science organization.

Call for 2 GFZ Discovery Fellowships 2019

The "GFZ Discovery Fellowship" is intended as an incentive for the further development of the program topics in the GFZ's POF IV research program.

The core element are 2 postdoc fellowships for a maximum of 3 years duration. These fellowships are intended to:

  • strengthen an environment that encourages new ideas
  • support bottom-up development of future topics
  • create an incentive for excellent young scientists
  • improve networking and collaboration in and between GFZ's program topics

Research themes should integrate GFZ's sections and open up interdisciplinary fields, which also allow the candidates to sharpen his/her innovative research profile.

Requirements:

  • you should be a junior scientist from within or outside the GFZ, holding a PhD in Geosciences or related fields that is no older than 6 years (an extention is accepted for approved time(s) of parental leave)
  • every applicant needs a GFZ section that sponsors and hosts the applicant ('lead section') and at least one additional co-sponsoring section
  • applications must be supported by section leaders with a reference letter
  • an innovative character of research is proposed
  • you should assure the interdisciplinarity within a program topic and/or between the program topics
  • you should have an excellent record (publications, preparatory work etc.)
Starting date: planned 1st October 2019
Fixed term: 3 years
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week)
Location: Potsdam
