Section 1.3 "Earth System-Modelling" at GFZ searches for a Ph.D. candidate (m/f/x) to work in the project "Ocean signals in Earth's magnetic field (OceanMag-II). The project is part of the DFG priority programme "Study of Earth system dynamics with a constellation of potential field missions" (SPP 1788), which is designed around ESA's multi-satellite magnetometer mission SWARM. The focus of OceanMag-II is the combination and comparison of simulated and observed ocean generated magnetic signals.

Your responsibilities:

  • numerical modelling of large scale ocean dynamics
  • assimilation of ocean induced magnetic field variations
  • advanced analysis and interpretation of terrestrial, marine and satellite based magnetometer observations

Your qualifications:

  • Master's degree in physics, mathematics or geosciences
  • strong mathematical and/or physical background
  • skills in programming languages and statistical software are an asset
  • good English language skills
Starting date: as soon as possible
Fixed term: 3 years
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to "TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)" . The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: part-time 75 % (29,25 h/week)
