The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. Research Associate (m/f/x) in Computer Science, Geoinformatics Job Vacancy No. 2526

Your responsibilities:

  • development and implementation of concepts and methods for merging and providing heterogeneous spatio-temporal data
  • design of data workflows and processing pipelines and their associated standardized interfaces
  • development of software components for the management of metadata for scientific geo-data
  • supporting researchers, e.g. in the software-based processing of geo-scientific data

Your qualifications:

  • MSc. degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Geoinformatics or similar discipline with practical experience in software development projects
  • ability to independently develop and implement complex software systems and their interfaces, using current methods of software engineering
  • high communication and team skills
  • broad interest and understanding of research questions
  • proficient English language skills

You have experience/knowledge:

  • in two or more server-side programming languages: e.g. Python, Java
  • with relational or NoSQL databases
  • with versioning and build automation, e.g. Git, CI, make
  • in dealing with metadata
  • with geographic software libraries, packages and applications such as OpenLayers, GeoServer, PostGIS
  • with data formats and exchange protocols, such as JSON and REST, netCDF and OPeNDAP
  • with standards of the OGC
Starting date: as soon as possible
Fixed term: 31st December 2020
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment.
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to "TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)". The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
