The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. Research Associate (PostDoc) in Geomicrobiology of Ore Deposits (m/f/x) Job Vacancy No. 3228

This position will focus on carrying out multi-disciplinary and cutting edge research on the role of microorganisms in forming low temperature ore deposits in Spain and Ireland and will be a collaboration between the Ore Genesis group in Section 3.1 "Inorganic and Isotope Geochemistry" and Section 3.7 "Geomicrobiology".

Your responsibilities:

  • conduct original research on microbial processes associated with ore deposit formation or detection
  • characterize and quantify microbe-mineral-fluid interactions using microbiological, biogeochemical and molecular biological tools
  • design and perform experiments with laboratory cultures
  • assess genomic and biochemical characteristics of the indigenous microbial community using ‘omics’, imaging and / or spectroscopic approaches
  • to work and facilitate communication in a multi-disciplinary team with diverse backgrounds
  • publish in international peer-reviewed journals; present research results at scientific meetings

Your qualifications: (essential in bold, all other are desireable)

  • MSc and PhD in geobiology, molecular ecology, biogeochemistry, geoecology or equivalent
  • specialized knowledge in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics
  • experience in complex biological and biochemical process analyses (e.g. omics, biogeochemistry, inorganic geochemistry)
  • fieldwork is a part of the project, so willingness / experience in outdoor activities is a bonus
  • experience in working at the interface between microbiology and geochemistry
  • demonstrated capacity for interdisciplinary and international teamwork and excellent communication skills
  • demonstrated excellence in publication and third party funding records
  • proficiency in spoken and written English, German and Spanish are an asset
Starting date: as soon as possible
Fixed term: 2 years (with possibility for extension)
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to "TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)". The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications.
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment.
