The institute invites applications for two positions for

Junior researchers (f/m/d)
to develop a metallogenetic model for the Eastern Erzgebirge in Germany

The advertised positions are both suitable either for PhD students (f/m/d) or junior postdoctoral researchers (f/m/d), and will be available from 1 October 2022. Each employment contract is limited for two years. Place of work is Freiberg. The working time amount to 39 h/week.

Scope of this project:

  • Developing a new metallogenic model for the formation of magmatic-hydrothermal Li-Sn-W and Ag-Pb-Zn greisen, skarn and vein mineralization in the Eastern portion of the Erzgebirge region
  • Acquisition of new structural and geochemical data
  • Methodological approach includes field work, structural analyses, petrography, fluid inclusion work as well as geochronology
  • Integration of new data with the results of recent research as well as historic data
  • Research is carried out in close collaboration with exploration companies in the area as well as the Geological Survey of Saxony

Your tasks at the position Structural Geology:

  • Critical evaluation of structural data and concepts available from the Eastern Erzgebirge region
  • Collection of structural data from available exposures and oriented drill core in and around known ore deposits in the study region
  • Selection of samples suitable to characterize and date relevant structural events
  • Geochronological studies
  • Data evaluation and integration
  • Contribution to a revised metallogenetic model for the Eastern Erzgebirge

Your tasks at the position Geochemistry:

  • Critical evaluation and compilation of data and concepts available for the physicochemical processes of ore formation for the Eastern Erzgebirge
  • Selection of samples of historic collections and recent drill core material, focusing on occurrences and deposits in the Eastern Erzgebirge that have not been considered in recent studies
  • Sample characterization by a combination of different methods, including: optical microscopy, XRD, µ-XRF,MLA/QEMScan, micro thermometry, Raman spectroscopy, EPMA and LA-ICP-MS, with the goal to constrain the physicochemical conditions of ore formation
  • Data evaluation and integration
  • Contribution to a revised metallogenetic model for the Eastern Erzgebirge

Your profile:

  • PhD student (f/m/d):
    • MSc degree in Earth Sciences; a MSc degree in Economic Geology will be an advantage
  • Postdoctoral researcher (f/m/d):
    • PhD degree in Earth Sciences with relevant expertise in magmatic hydrothermal mineral systems
  • Both:
    • Experience in relevant analytical methods
    • Willingness and physical fitness to do fieldwork
    • Driver's license
    • Strong motivation to work in a collaborative research environment
    • Excellent communication skills in English in a professional context (presentation of research results at scientific meetings, writing of manuscripts, discussions with colleagues)
