The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at www.hzg.de.

The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the broad field of coastal research. Our research focus lies on numerical modelling of coastal processes with specific expertise in modelling of atmospheric and marine biogeochemistry and interactions between different environmental compartments on regional and coastal scales.

One important component of coastal research is the combination of numerical models and observations in order to optimize state estimates for the coastal system in the past, present and future. Because of the high spatial resolution required to model areas like the German Bight, as well as well as the complexity of the processes, the resulting optimization problems are usually high-dimensional and strongly non-linear. As part of the data assimilation team the PhD student (m/f) will take part in the development of parallel approaches to solve these numerical problems in an efficient way using super computer infrastructures. Due to the long lifetime of application codes and the amount of different systems used with the same code, it is not viable to perform low-level optimizations for each system. Possible solutions for this problem include domain-specific languages, compiler-based approaches and high-level languages in general. The work will be conducted in close co-operation with the Scientific Computing group at the University of Hamburg. The duration of the position is 36 months.
