The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including drought, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic territory, the Bureau provides one of the most fundamental and widely used services of government.

The Bureau contributes to national social, economic, cultural and environmental goals by providing observational, meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services and by undertaking research into science and environment related issues in support of its operations and services.

The Bureau employs some 1600 staff throughout the nation. The Observations and Engineering Branch is a major element of the Bureau with facilities and capabilities distributed across Australia and its territories and it is supported by a national planning management and coordination framework. The Branch's observations networks and the associated data management, measurement and engineering systems, infrastructure and capabilities embrace the full suite of modern meteorological observations.

We are seeking a highly motivated and suitably qualified individual to manage the Bureau's marine observations operations. The occupant will manage the Marine Observations Sub-section with responsibility for volunteer ships, drifting buoys, sea level stations and marine automatic weather stations. In addition, the occupant will coordinate marine activities across the broader observations program and liaise with other national and international agencies. Key responsibilities of the position include staff supervision of a dedicated unit and management of the operational budget.
