The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. Data Scientist
Analysis and Visualization of Large Datasets

This position is part of the EU funded SeaDataCloud project, which involves 56 European partners and 5 international contractors. The objective of SeaDataCloud is to harmonize management of oceanographic data across Europe and to build a cloud-based system offering user access to the very large pan-European oceanographic dataset. As part of SeaDataCloud we apply and extent the widely used Ocean Data View Software (https://odv.awi.de) and develop online data analysis and visualization services.

Tasks:

Depending on your specific experience and skills, you will work on the development and extension of ODV and/or you will develop new web applications for the online analysis and visualization of oceanographic and other environmental datasets. This includes planning, design, implementation and testing of the new features. Scientists and other users drive the development, and emphasis will be on intuitive, user-friendly design as well as on efficiency and fast response times. One specific task is development of intelligent semi-automatic algorithms for data outlier detection and flagging using machine-learning techniques.

You will also contribute to project management tasks and participate in project meetings as well as workshops and congresses within Europe and beyond.

Requirements:

  • You have a master or PhD in natural sciences or computer science
  • You have experience in object-oriented software development (C++ or Java) and/or experience in the development of web applications (JavaScript/PHP)
  • You have interest and desire applying your skills in the interdisciplinary fields of earth-, climate and environmental research.
  • You are a team player, creative, and able to work independent and self-motivated
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English (knowledge of German is an asset)
  • Ideally, experiences with multi-platform software development (Windows, MacOS, Linux)
  • Ideally, knowledge of statistics and experience in data analysis

The position is limited to 31. October, 2020, starting as soon as possible. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund) based on qualifications and transferred tasks, salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
