IN DER HELMHOLTZ-GEMEINSCHAFT (HGF) The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) Bremerhaven, Germany is inviting applications for a Ph.D. student (Entg.Gr. 13/2 TVöD) to work within the HGF-Young Investigators Group "Global change and the future marine carbon cycle". The group investigates anthropogenic effects, particularly the rise of CO2 concentration and of temperature on the marine carbon cycle. The position is to be filled September 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter for the duration of three years. The candidate will work within a biogeochemically interested research team and perform studies to investigate the influence of ocean acidification on the turn-over of organic matter in marine systems. The candidate is expected to conduct chemostat-experiments with phytoplankton cultures simulating past, present and future CO2 conditions. His/ her work will focus on changes in dissolved organic matter and gel particles production/decomposition. The study will be embedded in the german BMBF 'Verbundprojekt' Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification (BIOACID). Candidates should have a master or equivalent degree in Biology, Biogeochemistry, or Microbiology and very good knowledge of Oceanography or Limnology. Experience in chemical analyses (DOM, carbohydrates, amino acids) will be an advantage. Good computer knowledge and mastering of English (written and spoken) are precondition. The Ph.
