We seek to recruit a well organised and highly motivated post doctoral scientist to join our team on an exciting project on global fisheries. The project aim is to improve our understanding of how trawling affects seabed communities and habitats across the globe and to use this understanding to inform 'best-practice' guidelines to maximise production while minimising environmental effects. The project is funded by the Packard and Walton Foundations with contributions from leading international seafood companies. The candidate will be responsible for undertaking a systematic review of studies that have quantified the impact of towed bottom fishing gear on the seabed that will lead to a meta-analysis of these effects. S/he will work with global partners to compile available information on the distribution of fishing activities from satellite monitoring systems and other sources.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of handling, modelling, interpreting and visualising large datasets and expertise in using a range of the analytical tools needed to do this (e.g. R, Matlab, SAS, ArcGIS or open source GIS). Candidates must demonstrate clear ability to work independently and be prepared to spend periods working away from home to collaborate with global partners. Candidates with a background in terrestrial systems will also be considered.

The post is initially available for 18 months, to commence as soon as possible, with a high probability of extension for further periods depending on the progress achieved in year 1 of the project. The candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Michel J Kaiser (Bangor University) and Professor Simon Jennings (CEFAS Lowestoft). The post can be based at either location by negotiation.
