Summary Job Description

Blue Ventures is currently recruiting an experienced conservationist to spearhead the development our mangrove conservation efforts in Indonesia. This new position in the Blue Ventures international team will be responsible for leading Blue Ventures' evolving mangrove conservation efforts in Indonesia, including project scoping, site selection and partnership development.

The Blue Forests Development Manager will lead scoping studies to identify priority mangrove conservation hotspots, as well as existing mangrove management and conservation initiatives being supported by community based organisations, NGOs and institutions in Indonesia. These efforts will result in the identification of candidate sites and partners that may be suitable for future efforts to replicate Blue Ventures' integrated, incentive-based mangrove forest and fisheries management models in Indonesia.

Sites will be assessed according to local interest in, and need for, conservation of mangrove forests and fisheries. The potential for incentive-based mangrove fisheries management initiatives will also be explored when identifying potential sites. Potential partners will be assessed based on their capacity for supporting field-based conservation efforts, and their alignment with Blue Ventures' mission and core values .

The Blue Forests Development Manager will design project interventions working closely with Blue Ventures' international conservation team, and drawing on the experiences of Blue Ventures' Blue Forests initiatives elsewhere. The position will oversee the development and coordination of project implementation efforts, including identifying staffing needs, leading recruitment, and building a strong technical team based around key capacity needs.

The successful candidate will be creative, open minded, and discerning, with excellent partnership development, leadership, project management and communications skills, and a strong technical background in incentive-based environmental conservation. They will be pragmatic and resourceful, entrepreneurial in identifying opportunities for potential future mangrove conservation interventions, and sensitive to the needs and interests of communities and stakeholders involved in mangrove conservation. Project scoping and design

  • Identifying target mangrove conservation areas, communities, partners and capacity gaps
  • Leading field scoping efforts and feasibility studies for project development
  • Site selection, project planning, and design
  • Liaising with Blue Ventures' mangrove conservation team to develop work plans

Partnership development

  • Building strong working relationships with key technical, institutional and community partners to ensure long-term programme stability
  • Representing Blue Ventures with government, private sector and civil society partners throughout Indonesia

Project management and development

  • Supporting local partners and community members in discussions around improving local mangrove management practices; providing best practice insights and recommendations
  • Adaptive project management and leadership to ensure project delivery to the highest standards, and in alignment with Blue Ventures' strategic goals
  • Working with partner organisations and Blue Ventures' conservation team to plan and coordinate reporting and communication around mangrove conservation activities, including blogs and news articles as appropriate
  • Timely and high quality technical and financial reporting

Communications and outreach

  • Evaluating and documenting key learning, best practices and relevant information, including broader contextual learning around mangrove conservation in Indonesia
  • Identifying opportunities to share and disseminate key findings, results and learning from conservation programmes with communities and partner organisations
  • Leadership
  • Team development; recruiting and training field and office staff
  • Developing a positive and creative environment for project team
  • Building a shared vision for Blue Ventures' mangrove conservation efforts in Indonesia, and ensuring all staff understand their contribution to the vision
  • Supporting administrative functions and activities associated with Blue Ventures' work in Indonesia as required

Skills and Experience required


  • At least five yearspractical experience in field-based environmental conservation
  • Experience of data analysis and management
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office and Google Apps
  • Experience of small scale fisheries management, and locally led marine conservation
  • Proven experience of financial and budget management


  • Experience of developing multi-sector partnerships, including with communities, fisheries authorities, NGOs and government agencies
  • Practical field experience in tropical developing coastal contexts, including knowledge of Indonesian marine environmental context
  • Sensitivity to partner and community needs and interests; humility and commitment to supporting local capacity development for conservation
  • Experience working with and reporting to donors, including corporations, trusts, foundations and agencies (desirable)


  • Fluency in English (required) and Bahasa Indonesia (highly desirable)
  • Excellent writing skills, with a proven track record in both report writing (required) and peer-reviewed publication (highly desirable)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to deliver strong presentations
  • Experience of delivering training both to groups and one-to-one


  • Experience of leading and building teams, including managing, mentoring and training
  • Experience of project planning and management, including setting targets and milestones
  • Ability to take initiative and develop innovative solutions to complex problems
