Post-Doctoral Researcher

The MARUM - Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen, is offering (under the condition of job release)

One post-doctoral Researcher for 3 years
Salary group 13 TV-L / full-time position

MARUM provides an ideal environment for postdoctoral researchers to become excellent in their field of expertise and to develop their personal skills to further their career. The Research Faculty offers plenty of opportunities for transdisciplinary exchange and collaboration across different disciplines in marine sciences. Postdoctoral researchers can make use of coaching and mentoring offers as well as a dedicated course and training programme.

The Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface” is part of the Research Faculty MARUM. Within the project Enabler “Ocean Floor Modeling Framework”, the work for the position lies in the general area of Earth System modeling.

Specific duties will include:

  • The configuration and extension of global ocean models of seawater composition, marine biogeochemical cycling and pelagic sediments, forced by element fluxes out of the ocean-floor.
  • Extension and development of global ocean models to implement an Earth-system model with two-way interaction between seawater and crust and forced by changes in weathering and sea level.
  • Application of extended Earth-system model to estimate global budgets using inverse methods that make optimal usage of new diverse observations and reconstructions, including new ocean-floor flux estimates and new time series of carbonate chemistry and ocean saturation
  • Presentation of the results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals
  • Writing of project reports

Your profile:

  • A completed doctoral degree in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Geosciences, Physics or Applied Mathematics
  • Knowledge/interest in paleoclimatology, paleoceanography and marine biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems
  • Experience in numerical modelling and scientific computation (UNIX/LINUX, Fortran, MATLAB/Python)
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Joy in working in an international and interdisciplinary team

The earliest starting date is as soon as possible. The position remains vacant until filled.

MARUM has developed into an internationally recognised centre for marine research with a focus on the geosciences, anchored at the University of Bremen.

The University of Bremen follows a diversity strategy. It strives to increase the number of women in the academy and strongly encourages applications from suitably qualified female candidates. International applications and applications of academics with a migration background are explicitly welcome. Disabled persons with the same professional and personal qualifications will be given preference.
