Applications are invited for a joint National Science Foundation (NSF US) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC UK) Research Associate (RA) position, between the School and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University (CU) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), forming part of the funded project 'Constraining the oxic marine sink of novel metal isotope proxies to underpin paleoceanographic reconstructions'.
The position will be based in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University, a dynamic and successful multi-disciplinary centre devoted to research in the disciplines of Earth and Ocean Sciences. The partner institution, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is the world's largest ocean research organization with access to a large number of research facilities and sea-going operations.
Working with Dr Morten Andersen (CU), Dr Kassandra Costa (WHOI), Dr. Ann Dunlea (WHOI) and Dr. Sune Nielsen (WHOI) the role of the RA is to perform a global-scale investigation of the Mo, Tl, U and Zn isotope compositions of modern deep-sea oxic marine sediments for a detailed understanding of the isotopic compositions of the marine budget of these elements for paleoceanographic reconstructions. The RA will work in the state-of-the-art isotope facilities of Cardiff's Earth Laboratory for Trace Element and Isotope Chemistry (CELTIC) and the Non-traditional Isotope Research on Various Advances Novel Applications (NIRVANA) laboratories at WHOI for all analytical work. At CU the RA will benefit from being part of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences Living Earth Research group and the CELTIC team and their cutting-edge expertise in paeloceanographic reconstructions and isotope analytical expertise. The cross-University project involves extended visits to WHOI, where the RA will have full access to scientific and community activities, as well as daily interaction with the WHOI PIs and other NIRVANA lab members.
In addition to these duties, the RA will be expected to produce work of publishable quality for appropriate high-quality peer reviewed journals, present papers at national and international conferences, develop outreach opportunities related to the project, and contribute to the development of collaborative research grants.
The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant subject. Expertise in analytical geochemistry is essential and expertise in isotope geochemistry highly advantageous.
This position is full time (35 hours per week). It is available from 1st January 2021 and fixed term for 24 months.
