Seagoing Multibeam Swath Bathymetry Technician

CSIRO is Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world. In the environment area, CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR) conducts climate, marine and earth systems research which is used to assist in Australia's national and global sustainable development. CMAR's Hobart headquarters include a deep water port which opens to the Southern Ocean and is home to the Marine National Facility (MNF). This year the MNF will take delivery of RV Investigator, a new state-of-the-art, purpose built research vessel capable of carrying 40 staff on voyages of up to 60 days in the oceans around Australia, from the tropics to the Antarctic ice-edge.

With the delivery of RV Investigator to Hobart we are recruiting new staff including Data Analyst/Multibeam Swath Bathymetry Technicians who will be responsible for the acquisition, processing, archiving and dissemination of multibeam sonar datasets acquired by the vessel. The roles require the appointees to provide support on voyages, and whilst at sea, take responsibility for survey planning, the operation of multibeam sonar systems, data processing and liaising with scientists on board to achieve the scientific objectives of the voyage. Whilst onshore, the appointees will be engaged in data processing, data management and voyage preparation activities.

Specifically you will:

  • Operate the multibeam sonar(s), sub-bottom profiler and other geophysical instrumentation as required at sea on the MNF research vessel.
  • Under technical direction, process bathymetry datasets using CARIS HIPS/SIPS at sea, deriving and integrating GIS and mapping products as required by the scientific party.
  • Under technical direction, process multibeam sonar bathymetry datasets using CARIS HIPS/SIPS onshore in Hobart.
  • Assist with survey planning, survey, and data collection and processing and liaise with key stakeholders as required.
  • Assist with the processing and quality control of other datasets as required

Location:   Based in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Salary:       $59K - $75K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

The successful candidate will have:
  • Tertiary qualification in Spatial or Earth Sciences, Hydrographic Surveying or similar field.
  • Knowledge of multibeam sonar theory, operation and data post-processing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of GIS, remote sensing software, and MS Windows OS.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills including demonstrated ability to produce manuals and/or reports.
